How Can You Test Colorfastness in Naturally Dyed Fabrics?
Understanding colorfastness isn’t just theory—you can test it at home with simple methods. Testing helps you know what to expect from your fabric and teaches you how to adjust your dyeing process in the future. It’s also a sustainable step, since you’ll know which fabrics need extra care and which ones will stand the test of time.
The Wash Test Cut a small swatch of your fabric and wash it separately in cool water with a mild, pH-neutral soap. Rinse and compare it with an unwashed swatch from the same dye batch. If the washed piece is noticeably lighter, it tells you the dye didn’t fully bond and may need re-dyeing or additional mordanting.
The Light Test Pin two swatches side by side, one exposed to sunlight and one kept in a dark drawer. Leave them for several days or weeks, then compare. If the exposed swatch fades quickly, you’ll know that particular dye is light-sensitive (common with turmeric, for example) and should be stored away from direct light.
The Rubbing Test Dampen a plain white cloth and rub it gently across the surface of your dyed fabric. How Do You Wash Naturally Dyed Fabrics?

For subsequent washes, treat your fabrics with care. Stick to cool water and mild detergents. Avoid bleach, optical brighteners, or fabric softeners, all of which strip color and weaken fibers. For delicate materials like silk and wool, hand washing is always the safest choice. Soak the fabric, rinse, and dry.
Sturdier fabrics like cotton and linen can handle machine washing, but only on a gentle cycle with cool water. Always wash dyed fabrics separately or with similar shades, and avoid overloading the machine, which increases friction and accelerates fading.
How Should You Dry Naturally Dyed Fabrics?

Air drying is by far the safest option for preserving color. Heat and friction from a dryer can weaken fibers and cause colors to fade unevenly. The biggest risk, however, comes from sunlight. Ultraviolet rays break down dye molecules and bleach the fabric, especially in lighter or more delicate shades.
Instead, hang your fabrics to dry in the shade or indoors in a well-ventilated area. For delicate fibers like wool and silk, flat drying on a rack prevents stretching and distortion. Large, heavy items like quilts may need extra drying time to ensure no dampness remains in the layers.
While drying outdoors might feel natural, resist the temptation to leave fabrics in direct sun. Even a few hours can dull certain dyes. Shade drying may take longer, but your colors will thank you for it.
How Do You Store Naturally Dyed Fabrics?
Once your fabrics are clean and dry, storage becomes the next key step in protecting their colors. Store them in a cool, dry place away from light and humidity. Light exposure is one of the quickest ways to fade natural dyes, and damp conditions can encourage mildew or weaken fibers.
Wrap fabrics in acid-free tissue paper or clean, unbleached cotton to add a protective layer against dust, dirt, and light. For garments or fabrics you don’t use often, breathable fabric storage bags can be helpful. Avoid plastic, which traps moisture and encourages mold growth.
Pests are another concern, especially with natural fibers. Protect wool, silk, and cotton from moths and silverfish with natural repellents like cedar, lavender, or rosemary. Store these sachets alongside your fabrics to deter pests without chemicals.

Can You Revive Faded Naturally Dyed Fabrics?
