About us

Aleatorio Designs

a creative sewing studio, making unique house décor, quilts, and clothing with second hand fabrics.

Our dedication to quality and attention is reflected in each piece as it is thoughtfully crafted and quilted by hand. We strive to make pieces that last and bring joy with a long and healthy lifespan. We believe that one of the most sustainable practices for a business is to use materials that are already produced and at the end of their first life cycle. At Aleatorio Designs, we are committed to making environmentally-conscious choices at every step of the creative process, from sourcing materials to packaging our products. Our goal is to not only create beautiful pieces but also to promote a more sustainable future for textiles. We want to bring more mindfulness into consumption, and for you to surround yourself with items that really speak to you.

Aleatorio Designs is also committed to encourage creativity and learning about the sewing craft.

A word from the maker

For me sewing, quilting, and dyeing is an art form and an important tradition. Arranging the colors, planning out the design, piecing, and quilting it all together by hand forces you to slow down and pay attention to details. I like to spend time with the things that I create, making sure the finished piece is of highest quality possible and working out ways to improve. I first started with patchwork and quilting because I wanted to use up all my fabric scraps and save some money. Patchwork and quilting are techniques inherently low waste and thrifty. Using second-hand textiles also sets a vital natural boundary for creativity – I only use what is available. Soon, my very big family started dropping off all their old clothes at my house and I had way more than I needed for myself. The idea of Aleatorio Designs was born.

I`m drawn to the geometry and abstraction in my practice, it opens up to interpretation and possibility. Nature is a huge inspiration. From the Arctic tundra and vast oceans of my childhood to the dry and hot mountains surrounding my current home, nature is a constant source of creativity. I spend time in nature every day, trail running, hiking, foraging, photographing, or just enjoying a sunrise. The relationship between nature and textile is further explored through a natural dyeing practice. Using mostly local plants and food scraps, the colors produced reflect the nature around me. I love experimenting and trying out different dye stuff, temperatures, time, and processes to achieve a huge variety of natural colors. The natural palette never stops to amaze me.
