Never forget your shopping bag at home with this adorable bag and pouch duo. The foldable shopping bag fits neatly in the flower-shaped pouch, creating a compact bundle that can be clipped onto a handbag, backpack, key ring, or stored in a coat pocket. Instead of carrying a loose shopping bag, you always have it ready when you need it.
This free sewing pattern combines practical everyday sewing with creative reuse. The sample version was made from reclaimed coat and blazer lining fabrics, proving that materials that might otherwise be discarded can become something both useful and attractive.
In this post, I’ll show you the finished project, explain how it works, discuss the fabrics used, and share what you’ll learn if you decide to make the pattern.

A Foldable Shopping Bag Designed for Everyday Use
At its core, this project is a practical reusable shopping bag designed to be carried every day. The finished bag measures approximately 39 cm high by 36 cm wide, making it large enough for groceries, library books, market purchases, and everyday errands. The long handles allow the bag to be carried comfortably over the shoulder or by hand.

The bag uses French seams throughout the main construction. This fully encloses the raw edges, creating a clean finish inside the bag while adding durability. There is no need for an overlocker or additional seam finishing. Because the construction is simple, the project is approachable for confident beginners while still producing a professional-looking result.
I wanted to create a project that was practical, reusable, and suitable for reclaimed materials. The bag itself is useful for everyday errands, while the flower pouch adds personality and provides a convenient storage solution. I also wanted a project that could make good use of fabric remnants. The flower pouch was designed specifically to use leftovers from the bag construction, helping reduce waste while creating a coordinated set.

The Flower Pouch That Stores the Bag
The feature that makes this project different is the matching flower-shaped storage pouch. When the shopping bag is not in use, it folds into a compact bundle and stores neatly inside the pouch. The pouch includes a zippered opening, gathered petals, a quilted flower centre, a decorative leaf, a key ring, and a swivel clasp.
The pouch is fresh and functional. It keeps the folded bag contained, prevents it from becoming tangled with other items, and makes it easy to clip the bag onto another bag, backpack, or set of keys. Because the pouch is a separate project, it also introduces several useful sewing techniques, including zipper installation, quilting, gathering, sewing curves, and hand sewing.

Made for Reclaimed Fabrics
One of my favourite aspects of this project is how well it works with reclaimed materials. The sample bag was made from fabric reclaimed from second-hand coat and blazer linings. These fabrics are often lightweight, strong for their weight, wrinkle-resistant, and ideal for projects that need to fold compactly.
The flower pouch uses only small amounts of fabric, making it a perfect way to use leftovers from the bag construction. Most sewists will be able to cut all of the pouch pieces from scraps already in their fabric collection. If reclaimed lining fabrics are not available, lightweight cottons, chambray, linen blends, and lightweight poly-cotton fabrics also work well.

Optional Pieced Front Panel
The pattern includes two versions of the shopping bag. The first version uses a single fabric throughout the bag body. The second version includes an optional pieced front panel inspired by the sample bag. This version combines several fabrics to create a simple colour-blocked design and provides a great opportunity to use fabric remnants that may be too small for larger projects. The pieced front uses flat-felled seams, giving the panel a durable finish while introducing another useful sewing technique.
Of course, you can also create your own arrangement using whatever fabrics you have available. As long as the finished panel is trimmed to the correct size, the remainder of the pattern can be followed exactly as written.
Skills You’ll Practise
Although the project is designed for confident beginners, it includes a wide range of useful sewing skills.
Throughout the pattern you will practise:
- Straight sewing
- French seams
- Flat-felled seams
- Edge stitching
- Zipper installation
- Turning fabric tubes
- Basic quilting
- Gathering
- Sewing curved seams
- Hand sewing
- Optional bias binding
It’s a perfect introduction to a lot of techniques on a small scale.

A Project That’s Easy to Make Your Own
One of the things I enjoy most about this project is how easily it can be personalised. You can use reclaimed fabrics, favourite scraps, naturally dyed fabrics, or fabrics from previous projects. You can make the flower bold and colourful or choose a more subtle palette. Quilt the flower centre by hand or by machine and experiment with different quilting designs. Even small changes in fabric choice can completely change the appearance of the finished project. No two versions need to look the same.
